How we research and verify

You should be able to check everything we publish. That's why every figure carries its source, every guide cites the law, and every correction is logged with its date.

Which sources we use

  1. The law itself. For Texas, the official codes at statutes.capitol.texas.gov, cited to the exact section.
  2. Government agencies. The Texas Comptroller (taxes and exemptions), county appraisal districts and clerks, the Texas Department of Insurance, the IRS, USDA and the Census Bureau.
  3. Complete public data. When we can, we download the original records and do our own counts instead of copying other people's figures.
  4. University and legal-aid research, always linked to the original document.

We don't use land sellers, lenders or "notarios" as sources.

How we calculate our figures

Example: for Hispanic homebuyers in Texas, we downloaded every public HMDA record for Texas (originated home-purchase loans) and counted them by ethnicity, statewide and by county. Each page explains what a figure includes, what it leaves out and when a sample is small. County data can be downloaded under a CC BY 4.0 license: use it freely with credit to Nuestras Tierras.

How we review legal guides

We write each guide from Texas law and official sources. Before it's considered final, a Texas-licensed attorney reviews it, and the page shows their name and the date. Until then, the guide says "Pending attorney review." Our guides are general information, not legal advice.

How we use AI

We use AI tools to find sources, organize data and translate faster. A person reviews the content, figures and links before publishing.

Corrections

If we find a mistake, we fix it on the page and log it here with the date.
